The Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest is an unforgettable experience!! The rainforest holds unique beauty and an unrivaled diversity of species of plants and animals. You will be amazed as you walk through virgin jungle. This huge green house with around 500 species of magnificently coloured birds flying overhead. Monkeys, sloths, anteaters, armadillos, tapirs, jaguars, manatees and fresh water dolphins are just some of the mammals that live here, along with a great variety of reptiles such as snakes, cayman and the great anaconda. There are up to 500 different species of fish including Paiche (Arapaima), measuring over three meters in length and the famous Piranha. Most jungle operators stay on larger rivers like the Napo and Agua Rico where there is less animal life. Our trips are chosen to showcase smaller rivers and lagoons with a much greater biodiversity. In this paradise full of mysteries, we offer you comfort without losing the sense of adventure. We actively promote cultural preservation, conservation and environmental protection.
By far the most popular tours with our clients are the 4 & 5 day options from Lago Agrio into the Cuyabeno Reserve which we
consider to be the best experience and value for money available in Ecuador. Jungle tours are probably the easiest activity to
arrange in Ecuador, if there are two or more of you, you can go whenever you prefer.
See a typical itinerary below and please feel free to write to us with any questions you may have.
If you are interested we also have eight day programs available for groups of four or more people.
If you are short of time, you can go to Mishualli instead but unfortunately this is no longer the real jungle experience. The area has been exploited for a long time now and you cannot see much animal life in its native environment, there is however an interesting animal rescue center. We still prefer to show our clients the animals in there real habitat, not in cages.
The Moggely Jungle tours go deep into animal rich biodiverse areas. So on the first and last day you will have to spend quite some time on transport adventures. You will need to get a bus or flight from Quito to Lago Agrio. If you are travelling from Quito to Lago Agrio by bus you need
to allow an extra day. If you do not have 4 days available for a Jungle tour from Quito.
We recommend you to do another activity closer to Quito rather than a jungle tour.
DAY 1: We meet in Lago Agrio at 07:00 am or 08:30 am depending on the form of transport from Quito and take private transport to Cuyabeno Bridge, stopping to eat lunch during the trip. From Cuyabeno Bridge we take a motorised canoe down the Cuyabeno River for 2.5 hours to the lodge. The journey will give you a first look at the Amazon jungle and a good impression of the river systems of the Amazon. It presents a great opportunity to see a lot of flora & fauna. You will observe different species of birds such as Caciques, Oropendolas, Greater Anis and the prehistoric bird “Hoatzin”. You may also be able to see a variety of monkeys and other jungle animals, depending on the season and weather conditions. We will arrive at the lodge around 4:30pm, where you will be shown to your rooms and can relax a little. After a siesta we will leave the camp for a swim in the lagoon and to watch a beautiful sunset from the middle of the Laguna Grande. You will then return to the camp for dinner, and can finish your first day in the jungle relaxing in a hammock or having a drink at the bar.
Day 2: After breakfast we take a hike in the primary forest for three or four hours, where your guide will explain how a tropical rainforest works. You learn about medicinal plants and should see some exotic birds or monkeys. We return to the camp for lunch and a siesta. In the afternoon we go piranha fishing, have a swim in the lagoon and watch the sunset. With a little luck you will observe the pink river dolphins or an anaconda sunbathing in a tree. You return to the camp for dinner, and take a night canoe ride to look for caiman.
Day 3: For those of you who are early risers we watch the sunrise and go on an early morning bird watching canoe ride at around 6 o’clock. You return to the camp for breakfast, then depart in native, dugout canoes to visit a family of the community of Tarapuy where you will see how Casabe, traditional bread made from Yucca (Manioc), is prepared. You can help prepare the Casabe and see how only materials from the jungle are used in making the bread. From here we visit the Siona community and your guide will explain the customs and traditions of the Sionas. You will be able to see which traditions have been lost and which have been maintained. After that we return to the lodge to have a late lunch. At night, we go on a short nocturnal hike through the primary forest in search of insects, spiders, geckos and scorpions whilst listening to the night sounds of the jungle.
Day 4: After breakfast we take the motorized canoes back to the entrance of Cuyabeno from where we take transportation back to Lago Agrio.
- This program includes a day of canoeing. We depart in native, dugout canoes, called “quilla”, to visit smaller lagoons such as Pato Cocha and Caimán Cocha. While paddling you have a better opportunity to see more fauna and flora, and you can get a good idea of what an igapo (flooded) forest looks like. You can observe a variety of different birds and monkeys. This activity is about 4 – 5 hours long so we take a box lunch with us.
