4788m El Corazón an ancient, eroded and extinct volcano

El Corazón

El Corazón was known to the pre hispanics as Guallancatzo which means nightshirt.

This mountain is an excellent acclimatisation mountain but we strongly recommend that you do not make it your first mountain to hike up. It is a very long day with 1100 - 1400 meters of elevation gain depending on how far the truck makes it up the road. .

Transport is Quito-Machachi-Aloasi. The exact drop off location depends on the roads but expect, on average, a 6 hour hike to the summit and 3 - 4 hours down. It can be a long day.

There are preconquest ruins on the northeast slopes, they are very overgrown and have yet to be investigated fully.

Corazón means 'heart'and is said to refer to two gullies on the northwest slopes which when seen from a distance look like a heart.
